apple crumble

I do not really have a sweet tooth (except for chocolate), but the smell of apples baking in the oven is a fantastic one, especially in the fall or winter. So if I am planning to make a dessert for dinner and I do not have too much time, apple crumble is an easy and fast option. You can add any fruit you like to this basic apple recipe. I typically add rhubarb, banana, or sometimes red fruits (strawberries, raspberries, blueberries...).

Ingredients:
4 apples, peeled, cored, and cut into large cubes
1 cup flour
1/2 cup sugar
1 stick butter, cut in small cubes
1 pinch salt
1 pinch cinnamon (optional)
Crème fraîche for serving (vanilla ice cream is a good alternative)

Preheat the oven at 400F.

Butter a baking dish, put the apple cubes into the dish, sprinkle with a little sugar and mix.

In a large mixing bowl, mix the flour, sugar, cinnamon (optional) and salt. Add the butter cubes and combine. You should work with the tips of your fingers in order to obtain a dough that looks like a coarse meal, with the consistency of sand. The whole process should take about 5 minutes.

Pour the crumble dough onto the apples and bake in the oven for about 30 minutes.

Before serving, warm again in the oven for a few minutes, and serve with a dollop of creme fraiche, or vanilla ice cream.
